The countdown is on… ISDN is switching off in June and if you haven’t already, it’s time to look at what needs to be done to future proof your business.

Our working lives are more fast-paced and dynamic than ever. Digital technology has revolutionised the way employees are able to communicate, collaborate and carry out their duties.

Doing nothing to prepare for the switch off can cause serious disruption to your business. In order to avoid this and remain maximally productive and competitive, businesses must keep up to date with the latest technologies, which usher in new opportunities and innovations.

As the ISDN switch off looms, now is the time to consider transitioning from ISDN to a cloud-based telephony system.

What Is ISDN?

In its day, ISDN networking was one of the most impressive communications innovations. The technology uses phone lines connected to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) to send voice, video and other kinds of data.

Advancements in communication technologies and the internet mean there are alternative options which are cheaper, have added benefits and will future proof your business.

Why is it Being Switched Off?

The logic behind removing the ISDN network on the Isle of Man is that, today, the technology is considered to be outdated and expensive to run which means Hosted PBX and SIP Trunking will replace it altogether.

Handsets will still be available to phone lines compatible with SIP, but the way in which they are installed will have to be altered – choosing SIP means you’ll be getting the same service with better benefits and increased functionalities.

The reasons for switching off ISDN are clear; from March 2018 to March 2019, there was a 35% reduction in ISDN services by all Island service providers.

If you run a business which uses ISDN networking, now is the time to consider switching to a network that will support your communication needs, rather than waiting until June and finding your office has no way to communicate with the outside world.

At Wi-Manx, we utilise the very latest voice communication technology to ensure your critical voice and video communications are always available and accessible.

According to a recent survey, there were 47,684 fixed line subscriptions, including homes and businesses, on the Isle of Man.

When Will the ISDN Networks be Switched Off?

Manx Telecom Wholesale have announced that they will switch off all ISDN services (digital phone lines) on 30 June 2020 and it went End-of-Support on 31 December 2018.

BT will begin removing all ISDN lines in the UK during 2020, with the final lines being cut by 2025.

It is highly likely that your business will use ISDN networking, as it is the longest running digital voice network still in use.
