THE final headlining act for Mannifest 2010 has been announced.
Alabama 3, well-known internationally for The Soprano’s theme tune Woke Up This Morning, will join David Ford at Glen Lough next month.

In keeping with the whole chilled vibe that Mannifest 2010 promises, the headline slot to close this years festival at Glen Lough will prove to be a very special show indeed.

Fresh from a support slot with none other than Bob Dylan and also headline slots at Glastonbury and several European festivals, it is with great pleasure we can confirm Alabama 3 will be playing an unplugged acoustic show.

They are probably most famed for the soundtrack to the classic Sopranos show and the film Gone In 60 Seconds.

Not deliberately a commercial band they have eeked out a reputation for hard-working and hard-playing.

Curiously, they played a show at Brixton Prison a couple of years back where, if you weren’t on the guest list, you couldn’t get out!

The band will be bringing a delicious flavour of delta-blues hedonism with a sound that enviably makes them very hard to pigeonhole.

A good sign in these days of a dirge of throwaway reality-TV rubbish that’s aired 24/7.

They blend techno, acid house and country in a most unique way.

Armed with an acoustic slide played by Mark Sams and a mean harmonica from Nick Reynolds. they provide some of the most colourful songs such as Hello I’m Johnny Cash , Devil Went Down To Ibiza, You Don’t Dance To Techno No More and, of course, Woke Up This Morning with the classic rasp of lead singer Larry Love and newly-added edge of Aurora Dawn.

Notable addition at the Avalon stage show at Glastonbury last week was a debut live performance by Joe Strummer’s daughter Eliza, who belted out some incredible ranges from such a slight girl.

It is hoped we can persuade her to come along and see what Mannifest is all about and whether her father would have approved.

Alabama 3 will top the bill for the Sunday of Mannifest that also sees Very Very Bad Men, The Moon Band (UK) Anna Goldsmith and Truman Falls, with Felix Ngindu opening proceedings up at midday.

Stage times and all confirmed acts will be posted very shortly at the official Mannifest site www.mannifestlive.com and at the Triskel site www.triskelpromo.com

The good news is organisers confirmed tickets were shifting particularly well considering there is still a four-week lead-up to the event but, as usual, it is advised to get your tickets early so as to avoid disappointment on the weekend.
Look around and ask the question, it is very likely someone in your group of friends is already going…..Don’t Be Left Out.

The Manx Sailing & Cruising Club was pleased to host the Wi-Manx Regatta over the weekend in Ramsey Bay.

Saturday started with very strong south-westerly winds, several competitors returned to the beach in the near suicidal conditions of 25+ knots, however 5 dinghies finished the first race with Simon Pressley in a full rig Laser coming out on top. He was followed by the smaller radial rig Lasers of Mike Pridham and Peter Whipp with Dave Batchelor and his daughter Emily (RS 200) some 15 seconds ahead of Andrew Dean and Katy Kneale, also in an RS 200.

With the wind increasing for Race 2 it was the smaller radial rigged Lasers that led the field home with Andrew Dean holding on for 3rd spot.

Sunday dawned with an improving weather forecast, the promise of the wind dropping off around lunchtime meant the start was delayed by one hour and a larger fleet of 11 boats went to the start-line.

With the fairly strong conditions continuing Peter Whipp led the National 18 of Mick Kneale home in Race 3.

For Race 4 the wind eased a little giving the advantage to the dinghies with larger rigs, Mick Kneale finishing first closely followed by Russell Collister. Andrew Dean retired during this race after bending his spinnaker pole in some sort of jousting match with Mike Pridham!

The wind continued to decrease during Race 5 and a ‘P’ course was set which gave the advantage to the Asymmetric rigged RS 200’s of Angus Jolly and Russell, Angus getting the win.

Top junior was Luke Collins sailing a Blaze.

Many thanks to Wi-Manx for kindly sponsoring the event, Ed Whipp for officiating as Officer of the Day on both Saturday and Sunday, rescue boat crews and ladies of the club for providing a very welcome Regatta Tea at the presentation.

Wi-Manx, one of the leading internet service providers specialising in voice and data solutions has agreed an initial one year deal with an option to extend this agreement in the future.

Gary Shilling, Wi-Manx’s business sales consultant, said: ”Our presence at Mannifest will really help us reach out to new audiences and engage local customers in a way we have not done before. The Isle of Man population needs events like Mannifest and we thought it an exciting opportunity to get involved with.”

Barry Fearon, promoter of Mannifest, said: “We are delighted to have Wi-Manx as the headline sponsor, they are an innovative and friendly company who are very well respected by the local community. They will not just sponsor Mannifest but get involved with many activities over the festival period which is something we’d like all of our sponsors to do.”

Ticket info can be found here – http://www.mannifestlive.com/ticketinfo.html

HAPPY CAMPING

At Mannifest we want to create a real sense of community – and what better way to do that than to spend three days camping with all your friends and family. Not only will this give a family vibe to the festival but it is also better for the environment! So come on Friday, park in the free car park at Glen Lough and set up camp in the Mannifest campsite and spend the whole weekend with us.

KIDS AREA

Arts and craft

Susan Quilliam and her angelic team will be creating a warm, friendly and most importantly fun! Fun! Fun! Arts and crafts area. Kids will be free to stick, paint, make and create all day long. The festival site will then be decorated with the children’s wondrous pieces of art.

Circus

The Play People’s Circus Space will be at Mannifest for the whole weekend. They will be showing off their spectacular circus skills and teaching workshops in mind-boggling things such as juggling, hula hooping, Diablo, poi, tightrope-walking and plate spinning. Make sure you get a chance to go on the fabulously, magical Rinky Dink Rainbow bike and don’t miss The PlayPeople’s awesome daytime and fire shows!

HEALING

Mannifest will have a serene healing area where festival-goers will be able to sample the delights of treatments such as massage, reiki, reflexology, tarot readings and more.

Shaman Tony Samara will be giving satsang in the healing area. He will explain in a direct and simple way that everyone can understand, how each individual can practically integrate greater acceptance, peace and joy into their daily lives.

For more information

www.tonysamara.org / info@tonysamara.org

POLICY/ Ethos

Mannifest aims to be a creative, environmentally aware, ethical and family-friendly festival. At this year’s event we have endeavoured to include something for everyone on the island – from a fantastic medley of music, loads of kids activities, circus performance, poetry, talks, healing and good food.

Mannifest is now in its second year. It started small and has now grown bigger. With your support we want to make Mannifest an integral part of Isle of Man culture, providing an annual platform for local artists, musicians and performers – A festival where we gather to dance, sing, play, learn and connect.

So bring your best stomping shoes and a smile.

A MAJOR sponsorship worth an annual five figure sum for three years has been announced by leading internet service provider Wi-Manx to support Manx Hockey Association’s ambitious plans to offer greater opportunities for the sport on the Island.

“It is the most significant one-off sponsorship Wi-Manx has made,” said managing director Edward Whipp. “Over what will be a three-year period we see it benefiting a particularly wide section of the community because of the diverse age range of the MHA’s membership.”

He added: “Hockey is an increasingly popular sport with families on the Island as it involves children, their parents and grandparents and this is a factor which particularly impressed us when making the decision. It is a safe sport which is very much at the heart of the Island’s communities and Wi-Manx is both delighted and excited to be involved in its future development.”

From the start of the 2010-11 season Wi–Manx will support all MHA activities – from junior coaching to Island squads, leagues and cup competition (including indoor). The sponsorship is almost certainly unique as it will benefit all element of the sport, including coaches and umpires.

MHA chairman James Shimmin said:

“This is a first for Manx Hockey so we are absolutely thrilled to have reached this agreement with Wi–Manx to support our development plans for hockey as a ‘key sport’ on the Island. It is an exciting opportunity to progress our family friendly sport and sits very neatly with Wi–Manx’s own core principles.”

He added:

“This sponsorship will enable us to match our ambitions with finances and be able to take the sport on the Island to the next level. This will be achieved through increased ability to expand our ‘grass roots’ coaching, including bringing coaches over from the UK, greater opportunities for advancement of our youth through junior and single system initiatives and to allow the Island squads to increase their competitive activity.”

The Association’s commercial director Graham Crowe added:

“It is brilliant for us to add this new income stream to supplement the contributions made by the affiliated clubs and our partner IOM Sport. I think our new catchphrase “Wi-Manx Hockey? .. simply the perfect match!” sums up exactly how the hockey community are looking forward to this link-up with such a well respected, Island-based company.”

The announcement of the sponsorship coincides with the visit to the Island today (Friday) of two England and Great Britain International players, Chloe Rogers and Suzie Gilbert. They will attend the MHA’s annual gala dinner at the Hilton Hotel tonight and conduct a coaching session with some MHA juniors and Island ladies tomorrow (Saturday).

The end of year gala dinner will also see the launch of the new Wi-Manx sponsored Island kit for players, umpires and officials which has been organised in conjunction with Charlie Turner at Intersport.

The MHA traces its roots back to the 1920’s and now boasts a membership in excess of 750 whose ages range from eight to 65. The Association is made up of seven clubs, with 29 mixed teams, 17 men’s and 16 ladies teams as competing from September to May, along with a thriving junior league structure.

The busiest periods were during the evenings when the live bands were performing – although we had constant viewers throughout the day.

The “button” camera that we piloted this year was also a great success. Over the period, with little publicity it took well over 1,000 pictures. You can see the pictures over at our facebook group

Going forward, we’ll be looking at other ways we can utilise our experience in these areas with a view to having live streaming from other locations, events and venues throughout the year – and of course during TT week.
