New datacentre and rebrand for Wi-Manx

At a time when the datacentre sector is set to grow by another 28 percent, Isle of Man online technology group Wi-Manx are about to unveil their new, state of the art datacentre. Planned for early September, the official opening of the centre will coincide with a rebrand for the 100% Manx-owned company – which is currently in progress in partnership with BRANDSavvy, a Glasgow based branding agency.

The new datacentre facility will feature the latest generation of redundant power systems, cooling technology, access control, high-speed connectivity options and server systems. From this new datacentre, Wi-Manx will be launching a comprehensive range of hosting services including dedicated-servers, co-location solutions, virtual servers, cloud hosting, complex hosting, domain-name and e-mail services.

Meanwhile, the company’s rebrand will position Wi-Manx as a global player in the datacentre market, giving immediate impact as well as longevity as the company’s success continues worldwide. BRANDSavvy has a wealth of experience in global brand development and positioning, and plans to develop a powerful brand for Wi-Manx that will truly reflect the nature of its business, while strongly targeting the UK and global markets.

According to a report from Tariff Consultancy Ltd, the datacentre sector will grow dramatically over the next five years – with revenue across Europe increasing by 53 percent by the end of 2016. Companies such as Wi-Manx are meeting this high demand. The benefits the Isle of Man are immense, with the attraction of global brand names and the creation of local jobs to sustain this growth in the industry.

David Stickland, Chief Commercial Officer of Wi-Manx said:

“At Wi-Manx, we are a strong player in the international datacentre business, offering some the very latest technology in a competitive package. Our new datacentre will increase our productivity and allow us to truly participate on the world stage. Together with our investment in the centre, we are also rebranding – as our profile grows, it’s important our business has a look and feel that our customers can recognise and trust.”

Heywood House Update

Work has been continuing at Heywood House – with a focus on the electrical, cooling and fire suppression systems.

We recently took delivery of the first batch of custom server cabinets and high capacity dry-air-coolers.

The server cabinets (and the associated kit) will be formed into uniform ‘pods’ of cabinets. These cabinet pods utilise a highly efficient cold-aisle containment system and are mounted to the raised floor system using an innovate RAFT system developed by Cannon Technologies. Modern cabinet system designs such as these help drive down the PUE value of a datacentre and the innovative nature of the systems introduce many other benefits relating to security and operational efficiency.

The images below show the cabinets in situ – with the cold-aisle containment system yet to be installed. Two of eight N+1 Riello UPS systems can also be seen, which provide battery backup to the IT load – along with some high capacity dry-air-coolers which provide cooling for the IT load within the facility.

More pictures from Heywood House

There’s a buzz of activity at Heywood House at the moment, contractors are busy working away on the fire suppression systems, electrics, flooring, the goods lift – a good opportunity for some more pictures.

Heywood House – LV Switchgear

I have added some pictures of our new LV switchgear that’s being installed at Heywood House. There are several of these panels that handle the power distribution throughout the datacentre, the auto-changeover for the generators, the input\output from the UPS systems etc. The panels are manufactured by UK Company Mardix – a specialist in switchgear and critical power systems.

There are different panels for the separate A+B power supplies and as you can see from the images, every output is metered (and recorded via modbus\snmp) – so we know exactly where every Amp of power is going.

Heywood House facility specifications

We’ve recently announced that our Heywood House data centre project is well underway. The aim was to build an energy efficient, world-class hosting facility on the Isle of Man – this would provide the necessary infrastructure to support our continued growth but also enable us to launch a new range of hosting products and services.   Whilst we wanted Heywood House to be somewhat of a green facility (with a low PUE), we haven’t compromised on the specification to achieve this level of efficiency.

We spent the best part of a year researching different facilities, varying approaches to data centre cooling, data centre case studies and we closely followed the progress of other datacentre developments in the UK, Ireland and further afield. This research, collaboration with leading equipment vendors – and a lengthly design  phase culminated in the blueprint for the current project.

Every part of the data centre will be made up of premium components, whether that be the generators, switchgear, the UPS systems, access control, lighting systems, cooling, cabinets or the power distribution systems – each and every component is, we believe – best in class. Heywood House should be one of the most modern facilities of its type on the Isle of Man, and it should be right up there with the best metro data centres in the UK.

A brief overview of the datacentre specification can be found below, in the coming days we’ll add some pictures to give you an insight into the project as it develops. Read more…
