How it works
We have several WiMAX base stations positioned on towers overlooking Douglas and the surrounds. These base stations have high capacity, redundant microwave links connecting them to our backbone network, giving you a connection totally independent of third parties. Wi-Manx has a fixed wireless access licence from the communications Commission giving us exclusive use over the band on which we operate, guaranteeing a high-quality service and no interference from other providers.
Increased bandwidth at a lower cost
Using the Wi-Manx wireless network bypasses the local telecoms infrastructure and by doing so allows us to offer competitively priced connections. xDSL circuits are currently limited by range; bandwidth decreases proportionally as the distance from the exchange increases. We can provide connections in the Douglas/Braddan areas with symmetric connections up to 4Mbps, double the fastest SDSL circuit.
Easy Installation, low leadtimes
The wireless equipment is easy to install, similar to a terrestrial satellite installation. If required, we can deploy a wireless connection in a very short time frame – even on a temporary basis. We hold stock of all our equipment, including spares, so we have low lead times for installation & delivery. Service delivery over ethernet The wireless service is presented as an RJ45 ethernet connection at the customer’s premises. This method makes it very easy to integrate our service into an existing network infrastructure. If your network is protected by a firewall, the firewall can plug directly into the wireless unit without the need for an expensive router
Symmetric, contended bandwidth
The standard wireless service is contended at 10:1, however, the base stations have a rich QOS feature set which allows us to offer priority services on particular types of traffic (VoIP, Citrix etc) which means even in times of congestion we can ensure your important traffic gets through. Unlike SDSL, our wireless service provides symmetric connections up to 4Mbps, in 1Mbps increments. The flexibility of the system allows us to upgrade traffic to coincide with busy periods or one-off events (web
launch, marketing campaigns etc). These upgrades are at the discretion of Wi-Manx and are subject to a minimum term.
Quality flexible bandwidth
Not only does the wireless service have low contention, the base stations have a rich QOS feature set which allows us to offer priority services on particular types of traffic (VoIP, Citrix etc) which means even in times of congestion we can ensure your important traffic gets through. Unlike SDSL, our wireless service provides symmetric
connections up to 4Mbps, in 1Mbps increments. The flexibility of the system allows us to upgrade traffic to coincide with busy periods or one off events (web launch, marketing campaigns etc). These upgrades are at the discretion of Wi-Manx and are subject to a minimum term.
Security
Security is of prime concern to all businesses. You can rest assured that the wireless technology used by Wi-Manx is secure. We have processes in place to protect the data while travelling over the airwaves. The strong encryption algorithms provide a high level of data security.
Coverage
The Wireless coverage is currently limited to Douglas, Onchan, Glen Vine, Braddan and the surrounding areas. In all cases, a site survey will be performed to judge the feasibility of an install.
Equipment
Everything required to connect to the wireless internet service is provided by Wi-Manx. Once you have subscribed to the service, we will arrange installation for the outdoor unit, and router/firewall if required.
Subscriber unit (SU-O)
This is the external unit that transmits and receives network data over the air to the WiMAX base station. The SU-O will be installed at your property by Wi-Manx
engineers. The usual place for the antenna is on the side of the building or on the roof and a single outdoor-rated CAT5e cable is run to the room where it will then connect to your router.
Router/Firewall
Wi-Manx can provide a router or firewall in order to connect the WiMAX unit to your business network. We offer a variety of firewalls and routers – each with varying functionality and cost.
