PlusTalk

Our PlusTalk service enables you to make free UK & Isle of Man phone calls using your Broadband Internet Connection. PlusTalk uses a technology known as VoIP (Voice over IP).

VoIP is the technology used to transport voice conversations over data networks.

Using the Wi-Manx VoIP network, calls are sent over your broadband connection to our Internet Telephony servers. The call will then be routed to leading telecoms providers in London where it then joins the standard telephone network, in much the same way a normal telephone call would. In most cases Call quality is on a par with normal landlines.

Voice over IP (VoIP) offers a number of benefits when compared to a traditional telephone company;

  • Much lower call costs when compared to 'ordinary' phones
  • Free calls to compatible internet phones all over the world
  • Complete control over your account via the Customer Portal

When using the service your phone will 'register' to our servers, this allows it to make outbound calls. The system supports multiple registrations, so you can have multiple phones in different locations registering under the same account.

Service Requirements

ADSL Connection

First of all, you will need an ADSL connection. In order to use our VoIP service you will need to be a Wi-Manx 'Home Broadband' ADSL Customer. Customers using other ADSL connections (Manx Telecom, Domicilium) will be unable to register for this service.

Hardware or software phone

To use the Wi-Manx VoIP service you will need a hardware device or a soft-phone. Our platform is built around the 'SIP' protocol, a standards based protocol that is widely supported by a large number of equipment vendors and software providers. Our SIP implementation has been tested with a variety of phones, adapters and software - behind different types of firewalls/routers. If you are unsure on the right type of equipment we will be happy to provide assistance.

Using a supported VoIP router or VoIP Adapter/ATA will allow you to connect your existing phone into the VoIP system, calls can be selectively routed over your ADSL connection or if you prefer over your existing landline. On certain models, in the event of a power failure, loss of internet connection or system error - calls will be routed back across your normal landline (PSTN Lifeline function).

VoIP Account with Wi-Manx

Each Home Broadband subscriber will receive a login for the voice service. The login allows you to make calls to normal phone lines in addition to other users on the network. Our system allows you to register and make calls from any internet connection and not just your own.

Ethernet Network Connection

If you decide to use a hardware device such as an IP Phone or an VoIP adapter to make phone calls then you will need a spare network port on your ADSL router. If you currently use a modem such as the SpeedTouch USB then you will need to replace this with an ADSL router.
